- Virginia - Grapes have been planted there since the early settlers came to Jamestown in 1607, making the first wine into the new World from indegenous grapes. Thomas Jefferson was given full credit for importing fine French wines to his estate in Monticello. Successful wines are now made in Virginia made from Norton, Touriga, Petit Verdot and Viognier.

Definition of the Month ...

- Sediment - The solid material which settles to the bottom of any wine container, whether it be a bottle, tank, cask or barrel.

This sediment is a very heterogeneous mixture which at the start of wine-making consists mainly of dead yeast cells. The insoluble fragments of grape pulp and skin, and the seeds that settle out of new wine.

Sediments in bottled wines are relatively rare, and usually signal a fine wine that has already spent some years in bottle. Many winemakers therefore take great pains to ensure, throught clarification, stabilization and filtration, that the great majority of wines made today  will be drunk within their first few years, will remain free of sediment for at least few years.
